Science Uncorked: Mighty, Magnificent, Menacing Mussels

Emily Carrington, Ph. D., is a professor at the University of Washington in the Department of Biology and Friday Harbor Laboratories on San Juan Island. In her talk, she will explain how marine mussels are the masters of underwater adhesion, forming strong and tough byssal attachments to rocky shores, aquaculture ropes and nearly any firm structure in the ocean.

Westcott Bay Shellfish Company will join us before the talk with oysters! Limited supplies available, arrive early to snag a seat and enjoy fresh oysters!

Science uncorked: subtidal Survival

Dr. Ken Sebens

The rocky subtotal zone of the Salish Sea hosts an amazingly rich biological community dominated by diverse invertebrate species and macroalgae. Over the past century, there have been changes in the biota of the region and in its physical conditions, including rising temperature and changing ocean chemistry. How has this affected the composition and functioning of these communities?

Westcott Bay Shellfish Company will join us before the talk with oysters! Limited supplies available, arrive early to snag a seat and enjoy fresh oysters!

The Most Abundant Fish You’ve Never Seen

with Dr. Karly Cohen

Just below our docks is one of the Salish Sea’s most abundant, and most misunderstood, fishes: the Spotted Ratfish.

Ratfish are ancient relatives of sharks and rays, remnants of a much more diverse group of fishes that dominated the oceans before a mass extinction reshaped marine life. This talk dives into ratfish biology, from their hidden nursery grounds here is Friday Harbor to an evolutionary plot twist involving a tooth-covered mating structure unlike anything else in vertebrates. It’s a story of backyard discovery, strange anatomy, and why studying overlooked species can change how we think about evolution, conservation, and the future of marine science.

Olivia J. Graham, PhD is a Postdoctoral Research Associate at Cornell University. Conducting field- and lab-based experiments at UW Friday Harbor Labs, she studies the health and resilience of local eelgrass (Zostera marina) meadows in the Salish Sea. She is continually fascinated by these humble—yet remarkable—marine plants, and loves sharing her knowledge about these invaluable habitats with others.

In her talk, she will discuss the significance of eelgrass in sustaining coastal ecosystems and her eelgrass health and resilience research based at University of Washington’s Friday Harbor Labs on San Juan Island.
